Byeon Hyun-joo is currently working as the director of the Exhibition Team of Kukje Gallery, Seoul, where she organizes exhibitions for artists such as Park Chan-kyong, Ahn Kyuchul, U Sunok, and Kwon Young-Woo. From 2011 to 2013, Byeon was an assistant curator at Art Sonje Center where she worked for exhibitions including Simon Fujiwara (2013), Shinro Ohtake (2012–2013), Lee Bul (2012), Hein-kuhn Oh’s Middlemen (2012), and Abstract Walking – Sora Kim Project (2012). Additionally, she has worked independently to curated shows including Tourist’s Dream (Project Space 2 at Iniva, London, 2010); Jason Underhill’s Sing Your Heart Out, part of Event Horizon, GSK Contemporary (Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2008–2009); Flexible Aura (Brain Factory, Seoul, 2009); and Visual Vocabulary – Between Words and Images (The Gallery at Willesden Green, London, 2008). Byeon has earned her MFA in curating from Goldsmiths, University of London, and double-majored business administration and art history at Ewha Womans University, Seoul. She has lectured at colleges, translated Curating Subjects (Open Editions, 2007) for its Korean edition that was co-published by The Hyunsil Publishing and Samuso: Space for Contemporary Art in 2013, and contributed texts on contemporary art including co-authoring the publication Curating Research (de Appel /Open Editions, 2014). hj.byeon@gmail.com
