Venue : Art Sonje Center, Seoul
Dates : 15 JUN 2018 - 5 AUG 2018
Yook KeunByung's 《Survival is History》, a solo exhibition comes to North village in Seoul- at the Art Sonje Center. Yook uses the eye upon the world and the intersenting gaze as means of questioning the nature of life and fundamental issues of the universe. The exhibition attempts to share with audiences the artist's ongoing reflections on history and famous work 〈The Sound of Landscape + Eye for Field〉 and his new work 〈The Statues of the Twelve Earthly Branches〉. An installation work in the form of a moving eye within a dirt-covered grave, 〈The Sound of Landscape + Eye for Field〉 views humanity as a microcosm of the universe and the eye as a distillation of humanity, alluding to an everlasting world of life and death.
Plus, the thing is that the video installation 〈The Statues of the Twelve Earthly Branches〉 depicts a single humanity, in which major figures responsible for transformations in contemporary history are flexibly interwoven within Yook's artistic language. Footage of these 12 people juxtaposes present, past and future, while a blinking eye slowly appears and diappears, forming a common thread within this layered temporality and encouraging us to ponder the connection between ourselves and the world.
