About Ryuichi Sakamoto

First coming to international prominence through the huge success of Yellow Magic Orchestra(YMO), the pioneering eletronic music group formed 40 years ago, Ryuichi Sakamoto has also been crafting globally-inspired rock albums, classical compositions, a stretch of minimal/ambient music collaborations, and over thirty film scores including 'The Last Emperor', 'The Sheltering Sky', 'The Revenant', and the most recetnly Korean film 'The Fortress.' His work has been recognized with accolades including an Academy Award, two Golden Gloves, a Grammy, the Order of the Cavaleriro Admissao from the government of Brazil, and the coveted Order des Arts et des Lettres from the government of France.

Not content to rest on his laurels as a performer and film music composer, Sakamoto is an adventurous and creative artist who has spent decades sharing new visions and possibilities for art. His collaborations with forward-thinking artists like Nam Jun Paik and Alva Noto have shattered preconceptions about music; with his groundbreaking opera 'Life', he brought to the stage a sweeping overview of the 20th century. The artistic connection formed with media artist Shiro Takatani through 'Life' has carried on since, and the two of them in conjunction with the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media(YCAM), have produced several astonishing works of media art to date.

Over time, Sakamoto has begun taking part in more charitable activities, transforming himself naturally into an "intellectual who acts" as well as a noted social activist. He has formed the Tohoku Youth Orchestra with people from regions devastated by the major earthquake of March 11 2011, established the forest protection organization more trees, and spoken out on behalf of the "No Nukes: movemnet opposing atomic energy and policy;earning major respect for the way he has used his social reputation an influence for his various endeavors as a peace activist.

Inactive for a period after being diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer in 2014, he successfully battled the illness and released a new album 《async》 in 2017. He remained busy, staging an exhibition of the same name that year at Tokyo's Watari Museum of Contemporary Art.
