The young MZ collectors driving Korea's art market boom are only just getting started, finds new government study

The report's author breaks down her findings, from gender splits to price points and why buying art is becoming more desirable among under 40s. Much has been written about South Korea’s rising young collecting class born after 1980?known locally as MZ, a portmanteau of millennial and Gen-Z?that is fuelling its current art boom. Now finally it is the subject of a comprehensive, government-backed study that breaks down the figures behind how and why they spend. The newly released report Analysis of Korean Millennial and Generation Z Art Collectors, commissioned by the Korea Art Management Service (KAMS), surveyed 1,361 collectors and also interviewed galleries, auction houses and also art advisors about MZ collectors.

Jeju Biennale shows the island's natural identity

JEJU CITY -- About an hour‘s flight from the South Korean capital of Seoul, Jeju Island is a popular destination for those who want to get away from the grit of the city. The ubiquitous porous basalt, covering more than 90 percent of the island, is evidence that the island was created as a result of volcanic activity.

  • [Focus] 2023 Dive into Korean Art: Seoul

Although I wasn’t yet aware of the full size of the group, I had traveled to Seoul as one of sixteen art curators and writers gathered from around the globe by the Korean Arts Management Service (KAMS)--an organization I knew little about prior to receiving a tantalizing invitation in my inbox to join them for "Dive into Korean Art," four days of studio visits, networking opportunities, and cultural immersion leading up to the opening of the Frieze Seoul and Kiaf art fairs. During this time we would spend several hours a day on a bus which shuttled us from studio to studio in far flung corners of Seoul?some nestled in the sanctuary of art spaces and others tucked away in nondescript buildings otherwise occupied by an assortment of businesses. What we came to learn quickly was that studio space in Seoul comes at a premium and early career artists are constantly on the lookout for support structures that help sustain their practice. This is why organizations like KAMS are crucial to their development?in addition to bringing an international group of arts professionals to their studios, KAMS promised to extend financial support for publications and exhibitions throughout the coming year.

In a thoughtful examination of contemporary art, curator Lee Daehyung met with 13 gallerists to explore their views on art, life, and the relevance of their chosen artists today. These conversations inspired the second edition of Dialogue, leading to the exhibition Mind Map. Focusing on the artists' philosophical and humanistic viewpoints, the exhibition uncovers the profound thoughts shaping their work. Lee skillfully extracted the gallerists' mind maps, offering a vivid depiction of their philosophical thinking. "13 Inner Views" transcends a mere interview series; it's a shared journey into the core beliefs and artistic values that resonate in our era. Inviting viewers to engage with contemporary art on a deeper level, the critical comments from each gallerist serve as a significant and accessible exploration of art's meaningful dimensions.

  • [Review] Dive into Korean Art, Gwangju(Part1)

When I was a young teenager, I came across this pearl of wisdom, ‘Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.’ As a Type A planner at the time, I thought this was silly advice because I firmly believed if you were careful in your planning, you could control everything in your living situation. But, as you know, life has its own way of proving itself. Soon enough, I was proven wrong as so many exciting things that had happened in my life since I left high school could be summed up as ‘a series of fortunate, unplanned surprises’ ? including my professional encounters with Korean art in my early career and, just a few months ago, this invitation to dive into the artistic scene in Gwangju in April 2023.
