The MMCA presents Lim Ok-sang: Here, the Rising Land, a new large-scale installation project by Korea’s prominent contemporary artist Lim Ok-sang, from 21 October 2022 to 12 March 2023 at MMCA Seoul. The exhibition was organized to spotlight the current activities and artwork of Lim, a figure who started in realist art before broadening his artistic horizons into land art and environmental art. His new works, which make use of MMCA Seoul’s site-specific environment and conditions, offer a new glimpse not only at the essence of his artistic vision but also, in a broader context, at his artistic body of work as a whole.
Lim Ok-sang, the 1st generation Minjung artist, was a founding and key member of the Artist’s Association, "Reality and Utterance," alongside Korea’s democratization movement in the 1980s, and mainly presented participatory social works across various genres such as sculpture and installation. His work frequently featured material elements such as water, fire, earth, iron, and air as the subject and conveyed a significant message with materials related to specific places.
For this exhibition, around 40 works of art including six large-scale installations and 130 archival materials have been presented in Galleries 6 and 7 of MMCA Seoul and its outdoor Gallery Madang. Installed are the new works, the soil-surfaced installation titled The Sound of the Dirt (2022) that created the head of the Earth goddess Gaia in Gallery 6 alongside Black Puddle (2022) in Gallery Madang. Do not miss the chance Lim Ok-sang's solo exhibition from the early paintings to recent large-scale new works.
