Nomadic Traveler, the 5th Korea-Indonesia Media Installation Art Exhibition invites its audience to explore ideas of travel in the realm of contemporary art. Migration has become a discourse in contemporary art today, and the diverse motives of displacement can be observed through numerous artistic works. There are artists who express the experience of separation from their homeland as diaspora; others view the act of leaving home as an ordinary routine. Historically, geographic relocation has been observed even before the term “globalization” was introduced into the common vocabulary. Today it is an ongoing phenomenon experienced on global level.

Nomadic Traveler examines ideas of nomadism and mobility in contemporary art in Korea and Indonesia. Nomadic tendencies are found in many contemporary artists in both countries as they cross territorial boundaries and cultural differences. They also go through artistic shifts as they experiment with different mediums and techniques. With the aid of digital technology, they search for virtual mobility. The eight Korean and Indonesian artists invited to this exhibition produce works that do not limit to human travel within a specific cultural context, but rather extending it to the mobility of material, reason, and information associated with our society. Through painting, sculpture, video, photograph, and real time projection, this exhibition becomes a joyful expansion of an artistic journey which reflects an aspect of contemporary nomadic life in the 21st century.
